SOMETIMES YOU DON’T!
January 28th, 2007In my line of work, if you are very fortunate, you may have the very good fortune to have a group such as this one.
14 bright, eager, brutally honest, young adults who have finally realized that they count. Eager to learn about their chosen career and themselves, they work well together and need little supervision.
But even the most placid environment can become corrupted. Though its not often that its corrupted by a 6′4″ mildly deranged, former addict laboring under the delusion that somehow all of these kids are responsible for his “slip” back to his old ways.
You recall, I told you about transference.
I had thought it rude of him to just walk into the room, especially since the door had been closed for privacy.
Even more rude was the fact that he was actually waving a gun, like in a really bad gangster movie.
Oh Crap, here we go again, All the hard asses seem to find me so easily.
No one is really sure what is about to happen and I wasn’t real keen on actually asking him.. But as the “professional” in the group, I stood up from where I had been seated at my desk, grading research papers and call to him to get his attention…
YO! WHAT THE FUCK, MAN?!?!?!”
Well that got his attention. Actually, it scared him cos his gun went off and blasted a hole in my ceiling. OK Now ya got me mad.
Ya seriously do not want to make an Irish/Italian girl from the streets of Brooklyn mad. You seriously don’t!
Students hit the floor like it was Friday night in East New York.
I dive for my purse, nestled under my desk.
Hand full with a long nose .22 revolver…. “Drop the gun, NOW” (another bad movie)
He wheels, and I think, ahh, this is what they mean by “looking down the barrel, etc”
I don’t think that anyone really thinks in situations like this. I mean, real cognition just does not enter into this scenario and it didn’t that day.
Funny the things you do remember though… thinking, Oh no ya dont… not in MY office… not to MY kids… FUCK YOU, MAN!
One shattered kneecap later, he finds himself in the lock up of the county hospital wondering just whers the hell he went wrong…
